Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th day of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a kid. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt.
